On January 12, a team of Lane Powell attorneys filed an amicus curiae brief of Washington Defense Trial Lawyers in support of Petitioners seeking Certiorari of a decision from the Ninth Circuit to the U.S. Supreme Court. The brief was submitted on behalf of the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers in Rederiet Oitto Danielsen v. Stacy (No. 10-791). The brief argues that the Court should adopt a uniform standard governing federal and general maritime law claims for negligent infliction of emotional distress against third parties outside of the employment context. Lane Powell Shareholder Katie Matison, who is Chair of the Maritime Committee of the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers, is serving as Counsel of Record. Other members of the Lane Powell team handling this brief as a pro bono project are Ben Roesch, Jennifer Smith and Jo-Ann Maynard. Professor Michael Sturley, an admiralty professor at the University of Texas and former Supreme Court Clerk, separately filed an amicus curiae brief on behalf of the maritime industry in support of the Petitioners.
